Willie McGee’s humble personality and strong character had a lot to do with his appeal as a St. Louis Cardinal to fans. That isn’t to say that his on-field abilities were lacking, however. Part of the 1982 World Series winning Cardinals, McGee gave one of the best defensive performances in World Series history by leaping into the air to catch a would-be home run hit by the Brewers’ Gorman Thomas in the 9th inning. Throughout the rest of his career, McGee was selected to the All-Star Game four times, won three Gold Gloves, earned the Silver Slugger Award in 1985 and was named the National League MVP, also in 1985. One of the Cardinals most beloved players, McGee played his final game in 1999, at the age of 40. McGee still remains a fan favorite to this day.
